A view of the Mississippi River inspires thoughts of time, creation and history. Why had ancestors come here where the winters are cold and difficult? Who lived here, for how long and what were their lives like? Had anyone lived on the island a short distance away? Stories reveal family history, archaeological findings and the indigenous nations who called this place home. Included are stories of explorers, heroes who prevented a war, early citizens and the spiritual faith they held. These stories and more are revealed in “Histories and Mysteries of Maple Island.”
The existence of God is the greatest mystery of life. Are prayers really answered? Does God really exist? Are angels real? This book attempts to answer “yes” to these questions with stories of faith, biblical quotes and personal experiences. The author’s faith walk in life has been as an ecumenical Catholic Christian. He views all faith traditions as “cousins in faith,” and that the world is too beautiful and complex to be an accidental occurrence. If you have wondered if you are valued and loved by God, “Finding Spirit and Light” may help
The Vertin brothers aspired to the Rotary motto of "service before self," and made their communities better in large and small ways. John's wife, Agnes Kreseszeski Miller, made extra meals and served them on Sunday mornings to people in need during the depression of the 1930s. Their daughter, Agnes Vertin Girtz, my mother, modeled a great heart by brining presents to families in need at Christmas time. We intend to continue their spirit of goodness by sharing a percentage of profit from this site to make the world a better place.
